Walking into your first runDisney Expo can feel overwhelming.

The crowds are huge. The noise level is high. There are runners everywhere, vendors calling out specials, Disney merchandise tempting you in every direction, and signs pointing to multiple buildings.

If it’s your first race weekend, you may be wondering:

  • Where do I go first?
  • What do I actually need to do?
  • Do I have to see everything today?

The good news?

No.

In fact, there are only two things you absolutely need to do. Everything else is optional.

Let’s walk through what to expect so you can enjoy the expo without wearing yourself out before race day.

What Is the runDisney Expo?

The runDisney Expo is where you’ll pick up everything you need before your race.

The expo has four main areas:

  • Bib pickup
  • Race shirt pickup
  • Official runDisney merchandise
  • Expo vendors

You’ll also find photo opportunities, sponsor booths, demonstrations, and sometimes food vendors.

For many first-time runners, it feels like a lot because there isn’t always one obvious path through the buildings. Thousands of excited runners arrive at the same time, and everyone is trying to figure out where to go.

I’ll be honest—sometimes I still just follow the crowd and hope I’m headed in the right direction.

So far, it’s worked. I’ve always come out with my bib, my race shirt…and somehow a pretzel, a beer, and occasionally something I never planned to buy.

The Only Two Things You Absolutely Need To Do

Let’s simplify this right now.

There are only two things you absolutely need before race weekend:

  • Pick up your bib.
  • Pick up your race shirt.

Everything else is optional.

That’s it.

Once you have those two things, you’ve done everything required.

Picking Up Your Bib

Before you leave your resort, make sure you have:

  • Your runDisney check-in pass (from your confirmation email)
  • A valid photo ID

When you arrive, look for the bib pickup area.

Bib pickup is organized by bib number, so you’ll simply find the correct line and wait your turn.

If you’re confused, don’t worry.

One of my favorite things about runDisney weekends is the Cast Members. There are plenty of them throughout the expo, and they’re incredibly helpful.

Just ask.

They’ll point you exactly where you need to go.

Your corral letter will also be printed on your bib, so you’ll know exactly where you’ll start on race morning.

Picking Up Your Race Shirt

After picking up your bib, head over to the race shirt area.

Shirt pickup is usually located in a different building, and yes—you’ll walk through the vendor area to get there.

Your shirts are organized by race distance, and a Cast Member will tear the appropriate tab from your bib before handing you your shirt.

One small tip:

Keep the clear plastic bag they give you.

You may want it later if you decide to use race-day gear check.

How Long Does the Expo Take?

If you’re only picking up your bib and race shirt, you can usually finish in about 30 to 60 minutes.

If you plan to browse vendors, shop for merchandise, or take photos, plan on spending a couple of hours—especially on opening day.

Should You Go on the First Day?

Many runners head to the expo as soon as it opens.

There are good reasons to do that.

The official runDisney merchandise is usually best stocked on opening day, and if there’s something you’ve been hoping to buy, arriving early gives you the best chance.

The tradeoff?

Opening day is also the busiest.

If you’re not shopping for exclusive merchandise, visiting later in the weekend can be a much calmer experience.

What You Can Skip

This is where many first-time runners accidentally wear themselves out.

You do not have to:

  • Visit every vendor.
  • Buy every souvenir.
  • Spend hours exploring the expo.
  • Feel like you’re missing something.

My routine is pretty simple.

I pick up my bib.

I grab my shirt.

I take a quick walk through the vendors.

Then I leave.

If I decide I want to come back later, I can.

If not, that’s perfectly fine too.

Don’t Stress About the Merchandise

The official Disney merchandise area is where many runners start to panic.

There may be a virtual queue.

Popular items can sell out quickly.

The lines can be long.

Here’s my personal philosophy:

Nothing in that merchandise building is worth arriving at race morning exhausted.

You’re there to run.

A Spirit Jersey or coffee mug isn’t worth standing in line for hours if it leaves you tired before your race.

If I get something, great.

If I don’t, that’s okay too.

My runDisney Expo Routine

Over the years, I’ve learned to keep things simple.

Here’s exactly what I do now:

  1. Pick up my bib.
  2. Pick up my race shirt.
  3. Walk through the vendors.
  4. Leave.
  5. Come back later only if I feel like it.

I actually enjoy the expo much more after I’ve finished my race.

The pressure is gone, and I can browse without worrying about saving my energy.

Mistakes I Made My First Expo

The biggest mistake I made during my first runDisney weekend?

I thought I had to experience everything.

Every vendor.

Every display.

Every photo opportunity.

Every piece of merchandise.

By the time I left, I was mentally exhausted—and honestly, I don’t remember much of it.

Now I know better.

The expo isn’t the event.

The race is.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Check the expo hours before you go.
  • Check into your resort before heading to the expo if possible.
  • Use Disney transportation if you’re staying on property.
  • Save photo opportunities for a quieter time if the lines are long.
  • After your race, bring your medals back to the expo or Disney parks for photos. They’re some of my favorite pictures from race weekend.
  • Remember the expo will not be open after the last race, so if you want to come back plan accordingly.

Final Thoughts

Your first runDisney Expo doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

Take a deep breath.

Pick up your bib.

Grab your race shirt.

Enjoy what you want, skip what you don’t, and remember why you came.

The expo is just the beginning.

The race is the real magic.
